Blueberry Pie Quest

I recently visited Mount Desert Island, Maine and stayed for two and a half weeks.  I made it my project to eat Maine blueberry pie and note which restaurants had good ones, in my opinion. I had 6 pieces of pie. I'm sure I will visit the island in the future and this post will aid my memory.

Criteria:  Flaky, buttery pie crust. Filling in which whole blueberries are detectable and fresh.
If you are interested, I posted photos of the pie slices on my Instagram account: m.mix.2009.  (I'm not going through the trouble of uploading the photos to dreamwidth.)

It is was hard to rank the top three. They were all enjoyable.

Here they are ranked by best (1) to worst (6)

(1) Lighthouse Inn in Seal Harbor.  It had a flaky crust and sweet filling with fresh, individual blueberries.  The restaurant itself is nice with competent servers and good food

(2) West Street Cafe in Bar Harbor. It had a good pie with flaky crust and a filling with good consistency.  The cafe is bright and open, but expensive.

(3) Geddy's in Bar Harbor.  Good crust, the filling blueberries were a bit chewy. It was nearly as good as Lighthouse Inn's.  This is were I got a marginal Poke-style salad

(4) The Chart House. Filling was good.  The crust was not quite as good as West Street Cafe's, but still enjoyable.

(5) Upper Deck in Southwest Harbor. The crust was OK, a little dry, and had an odd taste. Filling was OK but the berries were chewy. Their sundaes are great, so I'll stick with those in the future.

(6) Seafood Ketch in Bass Harbor. This was the first pie I tried on the trip. I didn't like the crust. It was very thin and tasteless.  The filling seemed like a block of blueberry color and flavor with few whole blueberries. Like it was a filling from a can.  I thought, maybe it was just a bad night, but the family went again the following week and brought a piece home for me.  It was still not very good and I didn't eat the rest of the piece. (If you know me, that says something.)

My Blueberry Pie Quest helped me be mindful of what I was eating.  I would enjoy eating pie again from the top four restaurants.

That sounds like an excellent project.
