One longtime friend of mine, who WAS born in Hong Kong and still speaks fluent Cantonese, is livid about Chengdu's victory. Apparently China does not recognize naturalization ceremonies in other countries, like the one for my friend in 1982. My friend was never actually a Chinese citizen, because he and his family left HK in 1974 when Britain still governed the place (he told me he was a "fourth-class British subject" before becoming a U.S. citizen). But now, if he ever visits China again, the government could arrest and jail him based on his Facebook posts about human rights violations in HK, and there wouldn't be a damned thing the U.S. government could do about it. >:-(
